A letter to Senator Lieberman
In response to Sen. Joe Lieberman's attack on Howard Dean in the Aug. 5, 2003 New York Times: Lieberman Denounces Tilt to Left, I wrote the following letter to Senator Lieberman through his election web site, here's the e-mail address I used: info@joe2004.com. I doubt anybody at the Lieberman campaign will read it, but you can:
Dear Senator Lieberman
All Democrats need to work together to put an end to the Bush administration before it can do more harm to America and the world.
I'm a Dean supporter, and I understand that you're facing a tough challenge from Dr. Dean. Of course you must fight hard to win, but I hope you will also observe that Dr. Dean is bringing a new energy and lots of new contributors and supporters to the Democratic party. I'm sure you'll agree that maintaing the support and energy Dr. Dean is garnering could be critical to putting the Democratic party over the top in the next presidential election.
It's far to early to know who the Democratic candidate will be, but whoever it is won't have much of a chance if they don't offer a clear alternative to Mr. Bush. By attacking Dr. Dean you may hurt your own chances more than you do his, as there will be little chance that Dean's following would support you if you were to win the nomination.
It may, or may not, be the case that Dr. Dean is too 'far left' to win the general election. But if you alienate the liberal base of the party (and I think esp. here in the Midwest, where I live), your chances would be even less.
All Democrats need to focus on challenging the Bush administration's POLICIES and RECORD. May the best man (or perhaps woman) win, and then let's get to work on winning the presidency back before America suffers any more damage.
