Watch Howard Dean -
It was only a first impression, but it was a good first impression: Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean being interviewed by the hard-nosed Tim Russert on Sunday's Meet the Press.
Dean is a plain spoken physician unafraid of taking a position that might not be popular with everyone, but he hit the mark with me. With a successful record as Governor of Vermont, Howard Dean looks like the kind of Democratic candidate worthy of support. His scientific background is part of what makes him appealing - he seems to eschew emotional or technical arguments. He has a reputation for fiscal responsibility, environmental awareness, and a commitment to improving health care.
You can read highlights of his thoughtful brand of middle of the road liberalism on the Howard Dean 2004 blog. As the blog says, Dean should have a good chance to win in the New Hampshire primary, and given his political experience, plain talking and northern liberalist style, he should play well in the Iowa caucuses too. So I'm looking for him to go from dark horse to the front of the pack early in the campaign.
