Downy (or ashy) sunflower grows in sunny, moist prairie areas. The leaves have a sage-like color, and the flowers disks are relatively large and showy.
In Starke County, Indiana, where this photograph was taken, Helianthus mollis is one of the earlier sunflowers to bloom.
