Viola pensylvanica is a small yellow violet that grows in boggy woodlands beneath pin oaks, red maples and nyssa sylvatica trees.

Blooming in April, this is one of the relatively few spring ephemeral flowers in the oak woodlands of the Kankakee sand region.
